SPOTLIGHT – Deborah Darlianmawii, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology

3T: Kindly introduce yourself and tell us how it was like growing up.

Deborah: My name is Deborah Darlianmawii. I belong to the Hmar community of Manipur. Growing up was interesting as I spent much time in Imphal, Aizawl and Shillong. I think the exposure I got made me appreciative of others’ cultures and instilled a desire to know more about them.

3T: What inspired you to be a teacher? And why did you choose Sociology?

Deborah: I remember playing school-school during my childhood where I was the teacher with invisible students. People say it is in me naturally but I got to realize it only when I started teaching. The way I chose Sociology for my undergrad was not a planned one. But after studying it, I became fascinated by the fact that something which is so familiar can actually be studied and it made lots of sense.

3T: What is the best and worst part about your job?

Deborah: The best part is when you see a twinkle in the student’s eyes when they understand what had been taught. And I think I am yet to discover the worst part of it if there is any.

3T: We have heard that you love to write. Please share some lines from your writings.

Deborah: Sure. ☺  I wrote a poem “Life!” during my BA. 2nd year at Lady Keane College, Shillong which got published in the college magazine. I can share some lines from there. It goes like this,

                        “Life!

Thought Life would be simple

Thought Life would be filled only with happiness and joy,

Thought Life would be always exciting and fun,

Thought Life would be grafted only to good things.

But it ain’t so!

LIFE..

Is actually complicated;

Is……..”

3T: How would you describe yourself in 5 words?

Deborah: I would describe myself as an ambivert, passionate, hardworking, curious, and a bit stubborn.

3T: What makes you smile and what scares you the most?

Deborah: What makes me smile are giving/helping and visiting new places. I am scared of heights.

3T: What is your greatest strength and weakness?

Deborah: My greatest strength and weakness would be being hopeful most of the time.

3T: What do you do when not working? Tell us your hobbies.

Deborah: When not working, I love to binge watch movies, read books, just hum or sing casually.

3T: Have you ever wished to meet any fictional character in real life? What character is that?

Deborah: Yes. I would like to meet Wonder Woman!

3T: Describe the next five years of your life, and your plans.

Deborah: For the next five years, I plan to continue teaching and involve in as many voluntary works as possible.
