Extempore Speech

A speech that is delivered impromptu – ‘without planning’. A speech that is NOT read or memorized but a speech that showcases an individual’s ability to think on their feet and deliver a clear, spontaneous, well informed and organized monologue.

The extempore presentation evaluates the participant on the following bases:

1. Ability to think off the feet: Since the participant is required to speak on the spur of the moment, it gauges the candidate’s ability to think, organize and speak then and there.

2. Analysis of topic and identification of the issue: An extempore speech has a probability of going in a random and directionless manner if proper analysis does not precede the speech. The participant is expected to understand the topic and key issues which need to be addressed and then logically position them to create a coherent and well knitted presentation.

3. Ideation: The participant should be able to promptly come up with a sequence of ideas for the speech within the time given.

4. Prioritization and sequencing to display logical thinking: The challenge is not just to speak, but also to make logical sense through systematic and rational listing of ideas.

5. Language and Communication: While articulation, fluency and modulation are key determinants of verbal effectiveness; energy, eye contact and gestures mark the efficacy of non-verbal connection.

6. Overall presentation skills: Like body language, confidence, poise and composure also have an important role to play in enhancing the quality of the extempore speech.

7. Time: The time limitation needs to be adhered to.

Rules:

1. Each participant shall be assigned a topic on the spot through a random method.

2. Participants will be given 2 minutes each for preparation, and 3 minutes for the actual speech.

3. Language of speech shall be limited to English.

4. No participants shall be allowed to switch the topics picked.

5. A timer accessible to the participant and judges shall be provided.

6. The contest master is accountable to the sanctification of the competition.

7. There will be 2-points deduction for every 20-seconds overtime from the total score.

8. No objection shall be entertained on the results. The decision of the judges shall be final.

Judging criteria:

1. Stage presence (charisma/personality, poise, body language) – 10 points

2. Content – 10 points

3. Organized structure – 10 points

4. Delivery – 10 points

5. Adherence to time limit – 10 points

** All extempore speech topics will be kept general. There is no specific theme for this event.

Debate

Debate Topic: Is Nagaland on the path towards progress?

Nagaland is on the cusp of a dramatic transformation: on the one hand, the state has witnessed tremendous development in a variety of fields, while also developing a dynamic educated class of citizens who are actively striving for their socio-cultural aspirations. On the other hand, the state is dealing with difficulties such as corruption, stalled economic growth, and ethnonationalist tensions, among other things. The debate tries to bring out the claims on both sides in order to determine if Nagaland is on the right track toward progress. In doing so, the debate hopes to address additional concerns such as reforming traditional institutions, women’s inheritance rights, LGBT rights, and on the question of abortion, to name a few.

Format Considerations: Participants must present their ideas clearly and persuasively. The arguments must be supported by facts, evidence or sound reason rather than opinions and personal judgement.

performing, but the poet is allowed to sing, clap, hum, or make noise with the

mouth or other body parts.

6. Poets may perform on their own or in groups with other poets.
