We (society) assign roles and duties to men and women distinctly and get accustomed to them even without knowing it. It has become so ingrained in our minds and attitudes that it is not easy to separate it from our lives.

However, it is essential to identify that gendering (or dividing roles of men and women) is not as natural as we make it out to be. Let us listen to what exactly it is (Gender) and how it differs from “Sex”. Stay tuned to know in detail the arguments given to prove that the role assigned to men (to be brave, to be less emotional) and women (to be gentle, to be emotional) are created by society and not based on biological differences.

Dr Aniruddha went on to say that the Constitution – is not merely a ‘Charter of Rights’ but a reservoir of dreams and aspirations of citizens of the nation.

He spoke about the ‘Flexibility’ and ‘Rigidity’ of the Constitution. Dr. Chandramoni Bhattrai, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, enlightened the gathering about the evolution of the Indian constitution through the light of debates between Fundamental Rights and Directive principles of State Policy. He cited various landmark judgments that set forth the trajectory for the interpretation of ‘Fundamental Rights’. He also shed light on the old debate on the Fundamental Rights Vs Directive Principles of State Policy by invoking jurisprudential aspects of the constitutional interpretations and treatments given to ‘Affirmative Action Policies’ of the Government of India that started from State of Madras V Champakam Dorairajan.

Dr Aniruddha gave concluding remarks quoting excerpts from the last speech of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar at the Constituent Assembly verbatim: “…however good a Constitution may be, it is sure to turn out bad because those who are called to work it, happen to be a bad lot. However bad a Constitution may be, it may turn out to be good if those who are called to work it, happen to be a good lot. The Constitution can provide only the organs of State such as the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary. The factors on which the working of those organs of the State depends are the people and the political parties they will set up as their instruments to carry out their wishes and their politics.”
