Understanding Systemic Racism and the rise of Black Lives Matter movement
Black Lives Matter (BLM) is an organized movement advocating for non-violent civil disobedience in protest against alleged incidents of police brutality against Afro-American people. This Webinar takes a look at the history and future of the Black Lives Matter movement and will provide analysis of the roots of systemic racism in America.
As consensus grows about the existence of systemic racism in American policing and other facets of American life, longtime organizers of the Black Lives Matter movement are trying to extend its momentum beyond the popularization of a phrase. Activists sense a once-in-a-generation opportunity to demand policy changes that once seemed far-fetched, including sharp cuts to police budgets in favor of social programs, and greater accountability for officers who kill residents.
About the Speaker
Jason Wong is a New York born Chinese-Filipino American. He has been a long time advocate for humanitarian civil liberties and equal rights for all. As an ally to the BLM movement, he actively participates in local protests, promotes and supports black owned businesses, and initiates progressive discussion on understanding institutionalized racism. Jason was recently in Dimapur celebrating his marriage to his wonderful Naga wife and enjoying the Hornbill Festival. They own several food and service businesses and live in Brooklyn, NY with their two children.
