The Department of Sociology invites you to a public talk on The Colonial and Theological Construction of Naga Traditional Religion. The talk shall be delivered by Tiatemsu Longkumer

Tiatemsu Longkumer is a research scholar from Nagaland, who has recently submitted Ph.D. thesis at the Department of Anthropology, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong. The primary research of Tiatemsu Longkumer lies in indigenous religion, religion and politics, lived religion, theories of religion, and philosophy of religion

About the talk: In this talk the resource person shall discuss how the colonial administrators and native Naga Christian theologians constructed their understanding of the Naga traditional religion through Christian conceptual framework. It is asserted that this ‘Christianization’ process has influenced the prevailing scholarship on Naga traditional religion. As a result, there is a pressing need for a fresh perspective and a renewed understanding of Naga traditional religion. Accordingly, the argument for a new framework shall be presented by using concepts from ‘new animism’ to understand Naga traditional religion based on the researcher’s fieldwork among the Ao Nagas.
