Special Lecture on 'Importance of Language Documentation and Funding Opportunities for Endangered Languages' @ Auditorium

The Department of Linguistics, Tetso College is pleased to present a Special Lecture on ‘Importance of Language Documentation and Funding Opportunities for Endangered Languages’ with resource person Prof. Shobana Chelliah, Distinguished Research Professor and Associate Dean (Fullbright-Nehru Fellow, 2022), Department of Linguistics, University of North Texas & Director, Computational Resource for South Asian Languages (CoRSAL).

Why language documentation? Why should individuals and communities invest their time, money and effort into documenting their own languages? The UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger rightly points out that languages are vehicles of our cultures, collective memory and values. They are an essential component of our identities, and a building block of our diversity and living heritage. And yet, according to UNESCO statistics, about half of the world’s 6000+ languages are in danger of disappearing.  Documentation is a step towards the revitalization and maintenance of such endangered languages. The lecture will touch upon the way forward to reach these goals through the documentation, description and archiving  of our languages, including funding and archiving opportunities.
