Online Inter-College Essay Competition on the topic “Towards a Green Economy”

The Department of Economics, Tetso College is glad to announce an Online Inter-College Essay Competition on the topic “Towards a Green Economy”.

“A green economy is defined as low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive.” – UNEP
Over the past decades a global consensus has been developed that in the pursuit of high economic growth, we should not overlook the adverse effects on the environment. It was during the 1960’s that the impact of economic activities on the environment was declared a major crisis. It is true that economic forces are the root of environmental degradation. However, the rapid increase in economic activity is inevitable so long as mankind is subject to evolution. This brings us to the apparent conclusion that we must all accept that pollution is a by-product of economic activity. Perhaps, to eradicate pollution completely, is beyond our ability, but we can always look for alternatives to reduce or decelerate the rate of environmental degradation. This contest is to spread awareness of the idea of Green-economy and to give young aspirants a platform to develop and express their views. Is India doing a good job in achieving its target goals? Do the current strategies incorporate the major problems? What are the loopholes? Is there room for further improvements in the policies? These are the challenges that lie ahead.
