DOT TALK Lecture on ELECTORAL POLITICS IN NAGALAND: TRENDS AND ISSUES
Organized by the Department of Political Science, Tetso College
Concept Note: An important aspect of studying electoral politics trends and issues is crucial for understanding the functioning of democracy and its impact on society. In a democratic system, electoral choices are at the centre of the political process. Hence naturally the study of electoral politics constitutes a core theme in political behaviour research on how voters elected their representatives, identifying patterns of voting behaviour, the role of political parties, and the impact of policies on citizens. By analysing electoral politics, we can gain insights into representation politics, the influence of money and media, and the extent of voter participation.
The electoral politics in Nagaland was first experienced in 1964, when the new state went to the general elections after rejecting the first, second, and third general elections held in 1952, 1957, and 1962 offered by the Indian state. Notwithstanding the late entry of electoral politics, democratic culture has been in practice since time immemorial in the workings of the traditional village councils in different forms among different tribal groups. The purpose of the lecture is to assess and analyze some trends and patterns of party politics since the Assembly election of 1964 in a lucid manner and highlight the issues that concern electoral politics in Nagaland.
